The Warriors is a 1979 American action film directed by Walter Hill. It is based on Sol Yurick's 1965 novel of the same name, which was, in turn, based on Xenophon's Anabasis. The story centers on a New York City gang who must make an urban journey of, from the north end of The Bronx to their home turf in Coney Island in southern Brooklyn after they are framed for the murder of a respected gang leader. The film was released in the United States on February 9, 1979.
After reports of vandalism and violence, Paramount temporarily halted their advertising campaign and released theater owners from their obligation to show the film. Despite its initially negative reception, The Warriors has since become a cult film, and it has spawned multiple spinoffs, including video games and a comic book series.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
After completion of a backup series for Viper Comics on Ryan Cody's Villains, I received a call from the Dabel Brothers. They had just acquired The Warriors comic book rights and began working on a new series called "Jail Break". The team asked if I would be interested in supplying a cover.
ILLUSTRATION PROCESS
The first step was to get an initial sketch approved. I mocked up about 4 different covers, and this was the approved concept.
RATING APPROVAL
Laying out more pencil and making sure before I completed the cover, that I was allowed to add as much blood as possible. (Which was denied...)
THE INKS
The third step laying ink to the bristol board and get the layers ready for coloring. I use a series of brushes and nib pens to get the effects I like. Along the way, I had noticed Swans neck was too long, which needed correction.
FINAL COLORS
The final cover, but unfortunately, the project was acquired by another company and never saw print. I corrected the neck and finished the colors with Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter.
